ADVOCACY... NOW

Construction site with erosion controlsWaterkeeper successfully participated in the process to develop effective permits for all municipal storm sewer systems in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. The new "MS4" permits were adopted Jan. 29, 2010. We are encouraged by the new approach to TMDL implementation, and pleased with the new low impact development principles.

Waterkeeper joined with the Center for Biological Diversity this month to support the proposed critical habitat designation for the Santa Ana sucker fish. The sucker is one of only three surviving native fish species in our river, and listed under the Endangered Species Act as "threatened."

All 12 Keeper organizations in California joined for a letter strongly opposing several bills that would erode the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and give 125 projects (of any size) over five years total immunity from public input and accountability. They are: ABX8 37 (Calderon & Nestande), AB 1805 (Calderon & Nestande), SBX8 42, (Correa & Cogdill), and SB 1010 (Correa & Cogdill).
